423. cause confusion as I found when invigilating an exam recently Have you got your Y was answered with a blank facial expression until I held up another student s card as an example Q6 was changed completely for the entry test Candidates were asked A Would you like to join this journey if you had enough time and money B Write a reason within 50 words All students were able to write reasonable answers of varying quality to this substitute question as were all the candidates taking the English paper in the entry test Q6 of the original version however was more difficult three students gave reasonable but imperfect answers despite not knowing the meaning of Tropic of Capricorn but one student taking the original version first simply repeated the second sentence of the first paragraph clearly not understanding it The gap filling exercise on prepositions in the entry test required candidates to choose at in or on to fill blanks at various points in the reading passage The two students taking the original version first scored three out of five despite having previously seen the correct answers before they saw the blanked version The students taking the entry test version first had markedly different results one scored five out of five the other only one In conclusion we can see that the entry test version was easier than the original in general On the other hand courier does no

440. sting a Comprehension Test Richard Baker For a recent February 2011 college entry test English paper I wrote a reading comprehension section based on my first journey to Japan When I sent it to my Japanese colleagues for their consideration they found it quite interesting but assured me that as it was written it would be much too difficult for the expected candidates third year high school students The final version was therefore significantly shorter eliminating many of the place names as well as such lexical items as Tropic of Capricorn and Aussies and substituting the expression tour conductor for the word courier A gap filling item on prepositions was introduced and the last question requiring candidates to write sentences in English was changed to eliminate difficult vocabulary and provide a simpler topic Soon after the entry test I decided to give both versions of the test to the second year students of the English Communication Course in order to assess their relative difficulty Two of the students took the amended version as used in the entry exam first followed by the original version The other two took the tests in the reverse order The original reading comprehension section is given below followed by some further comments on the differences between the two versions and the responses of the students In September 1976 a bus left London with forty people on board twenty five Australians ten British pe
