5. 999 to contact the emergency services BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 Setting up Follow these steps to set up your BIG Button ready for use Plan the location of your BIG Button The following points should be considered Situate your product close enough to the telephone socket so that the cable will reach Do not stand it on carpets or other similar surfaces that generate fibres as this may reduce the ringing sound and clog inside mechanisms Your BIG Button can be positioned in three alternative ways Flat on a table surface Raised position on a table surface using plinth Wall mounted See Wall mounting on page 31 Warning Your BIG Button is only designed to be operated in a normal domestic or office environment It should not be used in bathrooms or near water BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 a Insert the batteries Please note you will require 2 x AAA batteries to benefit from the BT Answer 1571 Call Minder message waiting indication These are not included Lift the battery cover and insert the batteries as shown Batteries are only required if you want to use the 1571 feature You will still be able to make and receive calls via the handset without batteries fitted However the message waiting indicator will not function 10 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 Battery low indicator The batteries power the Message

Waiting Indicator lamp The normal flash rate when messages are waiting is every 2 seconds When the batteries are running low and a message is waiting the flash rate slows to once every 6 seconds Plug your BIG Button into the telephone socket If you do not have a modern style socket call BT on Freefone 0800 800 150 and ask for a BT engineer to come and fit the correct socket This may be a chargeable service 11 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 3 Ringer volume Hix LOW OFF The switch is found on the base of your phone Set the volume of the ringer to Either High Low or Off Note If the ringer is set to off the call indicator light will still flash to indicate someone is calling you 12 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 O Ringer tone select R1 R2 R3 The switch is found on the base of your phone This switch allows you to select the pitch required for the ringer R1 Fora low pitched tone R2 Fora medium pitched tone R3 Fora high pitched tone 13 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 5 Amplify selection INCOMING s OUTGOING 7 The switch is found on the base of your phone Choose between either incoming or outgoing settings Incoming makes the caller s voice louder Outgoing makes your voice louder at the other end of the call Note When the Amplify button is used it will increase the volume of
7. use the Amplify button H Press the Amplify button to turn amplification on Amplify and allow you to decrease or increase the level of amplification The setting last used on Amplify will restore each time you turn amplify on To increase the amplification press the button To decrease press the button To turn Amplify off just press the AMPLIFY button again The red LED will light up to show when amplify is switched on BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 Voice mail indication If you have subscribed to Answer 1571 or Call Minder your BIG Button will indicate when you have received a voice message by the message waiting indicator light flashing provided you have batteries fitted BT Answer 1571 and Call Minder are automated answering services located at your local telephone exchange which will take messages when you are out engaged on another call or on the Internet Your BIG Button also has a quick access facility to BT s 1571 Service and you can use the 1 2 and 3 buttons to play save and delete your messages To enable your BIG Button to let you know you have messages you must first subscribe to a messaging service BT Answer 1571 is a basic answering service and is completely free of charge to BT customers To activate the service dial Freefone 0800 003 800 For information on Call Minder call BT Freefone 0800 800 150 This is a chargeable Servic
