1. 15th April 02 4380 Safety information General Simply clean your BIG Button with a damp not wet cloth or an antistatic wipe Never use household polish as this may damage the product Never use a dry cloth as this may cause static shock Do not open the BIG Button This could expose you to high voltages or other risks Never dispose of batteries in a fire There is a serious risk of explosion and or the release of highly toxic chemicals Environmental Do not expose to direct sunlight We recommend that you do not place the product on antique veneered wood to avoid damage Do not stand your product on carpets or other surfaces which generate fibres or place it in locations preventing free flow of air over its surfaces BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 Do not submerge any part of your product in water and do not use it in damp or humid conditions such as in bathrooms Do not expose your product to fire explosive or other hazardous conditions The emergency services can be contacted in the UK by dialling 999 You may also dial 112 which is valid in any country that is a member of the European Community You may not be able to make an emergency call in certain situations e If the telephone line is disconnected e If there is a fault on the line from your phone or on the network If your BIG Button is connected to a PBX switchboard you may have to dial an access number before2. 3. and wall plugs provided Use the plinth of the BIG Button as your wall mounting template to pencil on the wall a guide for the drill holes Note Before you wall mount your BIG Button check that e the wall can support the weight of the phone e you are not drilling into any hidden wiring e the telephone line cord will reach the telephone socket e the position you choose leaves sufficient space so that the phone is clear of any obstruction on the wall such as a shelf or cupboard 31 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 1 Drill two holes diameter 8mm for the screws vertically apart Insert the wall plugs provided if required WALL PLUG SCREW 2 Drive the screws into the wall leaving about 5mm free on which to hang the phone 3 Press the phone line cable into the groove on the base of the phone so that the phone lies flat against the wall 32 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 4 Rotate the handset hook 180 so that you can hang up the handset when the phone is wall mounted 33 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 5 Hang the holes on the back of the phone over the screwheads and gently pull the phone downward to make sure it is securely in place 6 Feed the phone line through the bottom of the wall mounted plinth to allow the cable to rest flat against the wall 34 BIG Butt

5. 999 to contact the emergency services BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 Setting up Follow these steps to set up your BIG Button ready for use Plan the location of your BIG Button The following points should be considered Situate your product close enough to the telephone socket so that the cable will reach Do not stand it on carpets or other similar surfaces that generate fibres as this may reduce the ringing sound and clog inside mechanisms Your BIG Button can be positioned in three alternative ways Flat on a table surface Raised position on a table surface using plinth Wall mounted See Wall mounting on page 31 Warning Your BIG Button is only designed to be operated in a normal domestic or office environment It should not be used in bathrooms or near water BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 a Insert the batteries Please note you will require 2 x AAA batteries to benefit from the BT Answer 1571 Call Minder message waiting indication These are not included Lift the battery cover and insert the batteries as shown Batteries are only required if you want to use the 1571 feature You will still be able to make and receive calls via the handset without batteries fitted However the message waiting indicator will not function 10 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 Battery low indicator The batteries power the Message

Waiting Indicator lamp The normal flash rate when messages are waiting is every 2 seconds When the batteries are running low and a message is waiting the flash rate slows to once every 6 seconds Plug your BIG Button into the telephone socket If you do not have a modern style socket call BT on Freefone 0800 800 150 and ask for a BT engineer to come and fit the correct socket This may be a chargeable service 11 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 3 Ringer volume Hix LOW OFF The switch is found on the base of your phone Set the volume of the ringer to Either High Low or Off Note If the ringer is set to off the call indicator light will still flash to indicate someone is calling you 12 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 O Ringer tone select R1 R2 R3 The switch is found on the base of your phone This switch allows you to select the pitch required for the ringer R1 Fora low pitched tone R2 Fora medium pitched tone R3 Fora high pitched tone 13 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 5 Amplify selection INCOMING s OUTGOING 7 The switch is found on the base of your phone Choose between either incoming or outgoing settings Incoming makes the caller s voice louder Outgoing makes your voice louder at the other end of the call Note When the Amplify button is used it will increase the volume of
7. use the Amplify button H Press the Amplify button to turn amplification on Amplify and allow you to decrease or increase the level of amplification The setting last used on Amplify will restore each time you turn amplify on To increase the amplification press the button To decrease press the button To turn Amplify off just press the AMPLIFY button again The red LED will light up to show when amplify is switched on BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 Voice mail indication If you have subscribed to Answer 1571 or Call Minder your BIG Button will indicate when you have received a voice message by the message waiting indicator light flashing provided you have batteries fitted BT Answer 1571 and Call Minder are automated answering services located at your local telephone exchange which will take messages when you are out engaged on another call or on the Internet Your BIG Button also has a quick access facility to BT s 1571 Service and you can use the 1 2 and 3 buttons to play save and delete your messages To enable your BIG Button to let you know you have messages you must first subscribe to a messaging service BT Answer 1571 is a basic answering service and is completely free of charge to BT customers To activate the service dial Freefone 0800 003 800 For information on Call Minder call BT Freefone 0800 800 150 This is a chargeable Servic

11. e 25 26 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 To access your voice mail CY Lift the handset and wait for the dial tone 57 Press the 1571 button You will hear the phone dialling out and after a few seconds you will be connected automatically to your voice mail service You can also dial 1571 manually to access your network answering service To listen to your voice messages When in 1571 mode you are able to play save and delete your messages using the 1 2 and 3 buttons on your BIG Button as described by the network messages aD Press the 1 button to PLAY your messages ae D Press the 2 button to SAVE your messages Oe Press the 3 button to DELETE your messages BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 Important After an incoming call or after using the handset your Big Button will check for any messages When messages have been left or you replace the handset leaving messages unplayed there will be a delay of approximately 1 minute before the message waiting indicator light flashes Note The message waiting indicator is activated by an interrupted dial tone which you can hear when you pick up your phone BT Select Services such as Call Diversion and Call Barring also use interrupted dial tone so therefore will cause the message waiting indicator to flash even if no messages have been left 27 28 BIG Button 4th Edition 15th April 02 4380 Gen
