User s Guide EXTECH INSTRUMENTS Digital Sound Level Meter Model 407740 Sound Level Meter EE A AT A A A A E A Introduction Congratulations on your purchase of the Extech 407740 Digital Sound Level Meter This device measures sound in decibels dB Useful features include A C Weighting Fast Slow Response Time and Maximum Reading HOLD Careful use of this meter will provide years of reliable service Warranty EXTECH INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION warrants this instrument to be free of defects in parts and workmanship for one year from date of shipment a six month limited warranty applies on sensors and cables If it should become necessary to return the instrument for service during or beyond the warranty period contact the Customer Service Department at 781 890 7440 ext 210 for authorization or visit our website at www extech com click on Contact Extech and go to Service Department to request an RA number A Return Authorization RA number must be issued before any product is returned to Extech The sender is responsible for shipping charges freight insurance and proper packaging to prevent damage in transit This warranty does not apply to defects resulting from action of the user such as misuse improper wiring operation outside of specification improper maintenance or repair or unauthorized modification Extech specificall
4. witch to select Fast or Slow The setting is determined by the application and any directives or standards related to the application For example most hearing conservation or OSHA related testing is done using the SLOW setting with A weighting To capture quick sound peaks however use the FAST setting Selecting the Measurement Range Select the measuring range using the dB selector switch If the high 4 or low Y indicators appear on the display select a lower range for A or higher range for Y Maximum Hold Function Select MAX HOLD using the RESPONSE selector switch to capture the maximum dB level The meter response will be set to FAST The display will only display the highest reading in this mode To reset the Maximum Hold display press the black reset button on the bottom of the meter next to the analog output jack Calibration Frequent calibration using an acoustic calibrator is recommended Follow the instruction provided with the calibrator 3 Model 407740 version 1 6 8 05 Battery Replacement The low battery indication BAT appears on the LCD when the 9V battery is nearing depletion Reliable readings can be obtained for several hours after the first appearance of the low battery indication To replace the battery slide the battery compartment cover off the rear of the instrument and replace the 9V battery Secure the cover before use Reference Information Frequency Weighting Characteristics
