1. After connecting the printer to your computer install the printer software It is included on the Printer Software for EPSON EPL C8200 CD ROM shipped with your printer Your printer software includes Printer driver The printer driver gives you complete control over your printer with the Microsoft Windows 95 98 NT 4 0 Windows 3 1 or NT 3 51 operating systems With it you can make settings such as print quality color setting and paper size EPSON Status Monitor 3 utility except for Windows 3 1 and Windows NT 3 51 The EPSON Status Monitor 3 utility allows you to view printer status information such as the amount of toner remaining and check for any printer errors When the printer driver is installed the Epson Status Monitor 3 utility is also installed automatically EPSON Font Manager The EPSON Font Manager provides you with 31 printer fonts and 96 software fonts Online help Online help gives you instant on screen access to detailed information and instructions on printer settings Note M If you wish to make a floppy disk version of the printer software on your CD ROM you can use the driver disk creation utility included on the CD ROM Installing the Printer Software 51 A Ifyou are running DOS you must use a driver other than the one included with the printer see For DOS Programs on page 56 For All Windows Users Follow these steps to install the printer driver for Windo

For DOS Programs When using this printer with DOS programs only black and white printing is available Since DOS applications differ in their driver selection procedures there is no standard way to select the printer driver See your software manual for information on how to select the printer 56 Installing the Printer Software When asked to select a printer pick the first printer available in the list below EPL C8200 EPL C8000 EPL 5700 EPL 5500 5500 EPL N1600 EPL N1200 EPL N2000 EPL 5600 EPL 3000 EPL 5200 5200 HP LaserJet III IIIP IIID HP LaserJet III Si HP LaserJet 4L EPL 9000 HP LaserJet 4 If you choose a printer other than the EPL C8200 you may not be able to use some printer features Making Basic Printer Settings When you install options in the printer you need to make some settings before you start printing In addition you should make sure that the driver settings match your document requirements While many Windows applications override the printer settings made with the driver some do not For Windows 95 98 users If you have installed any options in the printer you need to make optional settings in your printer driver before using the option Installing the Printer Software 57 Note When the EPSON Status Monitor 3 utility is running and the printer is turned on the information on the installed options is automatically transmitted to the computer and its inf

Loading paper 1 Fan a stack of A4 or Letter size paper then tap it on a flat surface to even the edges 2 Be sure to load paper into the MP tray long edge first Load the stack of paper with the printable surface up and left edge of the paper resting against the left paper guide of the MP tray Then slide the right paper guide against the right edge of the paper Printing a status sheet 1 Turn the power switch at the left side of the printer on The lights and the display messages are changed in the following order All lights turn on once and then turn off The display shows 48 Plugging in the Printer The display shows with the actual memory size of your printer including the memory size of optional memory module if installed displayed in place of 5 The display shows Se1f1 The On Line light turns on After about five minutes the display shows Fs 2 Press the Enter button The display shows 3 Press the Enter button again The message on the display starts flashing and the printer starts printing the status sheet 4 Check the following points in the printed status sheet 1 The printer can print the status sheet clearly Q The information on the options installed to the printer is printed correctly If you can find the installed option s name under Hardware Configurations title it means that the printer can recognize the installed option properly Note If you installed

Q Two or more people should carry this unit because it weighs approximately 24 kg 53 Ib Q When installing this unit on the printer lock all casters at the bottom of the unit Also when you do not need to move the unit with the printer lock all casters Otherwise the unit may cause an accident 1 Because the printer weighs approximately 70 kg 154 Ib you should not lift or carry it by yourself Four people should carry it lifting it by the correct positions as shown below 24 Installing the Options Warning If you lift the printer improperly it may fall and injure you Unpacking and removing the protective materials 1 Open the box that contains the unit Have two or more people lift the unit Lift with these bars AN Warning Two or more people should Iift the unit because it weighs approximately 24 kg 53 Ib Installing the Options 25 2 Pulloutthe top cassette and remove the protective materials in the following order 1 cardboard 2 foam material 3 tape and plastic material Then remove the cassette from the unit by gently lifting it up 3 Forthe middle and lower cassettes remove the protective materials in the same way as in step 2 Then remove the cassettes from the unit 26 Installing the Options 4 Remove the two pieces of cardboard from the inside of the unit 5 Return the cassettes to the unit Lift the cassette
6. an optional memory module Installed Memory shows the total size including both default 64 MB and the optional module s size However if you installed two 128 MB DIMMs the status sheets shows 256 MB because the maximum memory size for this printer is 256 MB If the printer cannot print the status sheet or you find any problem with the printing result of the status sheet contact your dealer Plugging in the Printer 49 Connecting to the Computer To connect your computer to your printer s built in parallel interface you need a shielded twisted pair parallel interface cable that is IEEE 1284 compatible Note If you installed the optional interface card you need a different type of cable See the optional interface card s manual 1 Make sure that both the printer and the computer are off 2 Plug the cable connector securely into the printer s parallel interface connector and squeeze the wire clips together until they lock in place on both sides of the connector Note If your cable has a ground wire connect it to the printer s ground connector as shown below 3 Plug the other end of the cable into the computer If the cable has a ground wire at the computer end attach it to the ground connector at the back of the computer After you connect the printer to your computer install the printer software as described in the next section 50 Plugging in the Printer 6 Installing the Printer Software
7. dialog box appears Select the installed paper source from the Optional paper sources list box Then click OK The EPSON EPL C8200 Advanced dialog box appears Select the paper size for each paper source from the paper source list box The optional paper source will not appear unless it is selected in Step 5 Installing the Printer Software 61 7 Click OK to close the EPSON EPL C8200 Advanced dialog box Note The EPSON Status Monitor 3 utility is not available for Windows 3 1 62 Installing the Printer Software 7 Accessing Online Help Your Windows printer driver has an extensive online help feature that includes detailed information and instructions on the driver settings Online help will answer most of your questions about the driver Note Online help is not available for DOS applications Accessing from the Windows Printer Driver To access online help from the printer driver follow the instructions Making Basic Printer Settings on page 57 to access thedriver ThenclicktheHelp buttonat thebottom of the window that appears Accessing from Windows Applications To access help from your application open the File menu and choose Print or Print Setup Then click Printer Setup Options or Properties you may need to click a combination of these buttons depending on the software you are using Then click the or Help button in the window that appears Accessing Online Help 63 8 Print

9. fi Collate Reverse Order EPSON Version Info 4 Make the settings in each menu depending on your document type Refer to the driver s online help or the description in Chapter 4 in the Reference Guide for the details of each setting 5 After making all settings click OK at the bottom of the window andreturn to the Print dialog box or a similar dialog box 6 Click Close OK or Print to print You may need to click more than one of these buttons in different dialog boxes Printing with Windows 65 Canceling Printing To cancel printing follow the instructions below 1 Pressthe On Line button on the printer s control panel The On Line light turns off n Paper Source Page Size Manual Feed Orientation RiTech Copies MP Tray Size To Save n Menu Item Value Enter o o o On Line Form Feed Continue SelecType A A A A 2 mM KL M M M M Reset Alt Note If your computer continues the printing job cancel it as follows Double click the printer icon in the task bar at the bottom right Then click the printing job that you want to cancel and click Purge Print Jobs in the Printer menu 2 Check that the Form Feed light is on not flashing If this light is flashing the printer is receiving the data from the computer In this case wait until the printer receives all data and the Form Feed light turns on 66 Printing with Windows 3 K

12. memory module into the slot straight either slot is OK as shown below The clips on the slot fasten the DIMM when it is inserted correctly TIT LUMEN N Caution D Do not force the DIMM into the slot A Be sure to insert the DIMM facing the correct way Installing the Options 39 6 Toreplacetheright side cover first insert the cover s hook in the slot at the back of the printer then close the front side making sure to fit the cover pin into the printer hole 7 Secure the cover with the screws Close the front cover and the paper path unit 40 Installing the Options Installing the ROM Module In some locations there are optional ROM modules that can expand your printer s features G Caution Before you install the ROM module be sure to discharge any static electricity by touching a grounded piece of metal Otherwise you may damage static sensitive components AN Warning Be careful when working inside the printer as some components are sharp and may cause injury 1 Open the printer cover and pull out the paper path unit at least 10 cm 4 inches Installing the Options 41 2 Remove the screws on the right side cover 3 Openthefront side of the right side cover until the pin on the cover comes out of the hole Then remove the cover by sliding it back 42 Installing the Options 4 5 Check the position of the slo

19. ace You will need to reattach it if you remove the interface card later Installing the Options 45 3 Slide the interface card along the slots on both sides of the interface compartment Push the card in firmly making sure that the connector at the back of the interface card is fully inserted into the printer s internal socket 4 Replace the two screws and tighten them KAN 46 Installing the Options Plugging in the Printer Check the label on the left side of the printer to make sure that the voltage reguired by the printer matches that of the electrical outlet it will be plugged into Also make sure that you have the correct power cord for your power source G Caution It is not possible to change the printer s voltage If the reguired voltage and your outlet voltage do not match contact your dealer for assistance Do not plug in the power cord Make sure that the printer is turned off It is off when the O side of the power switch on the left side of the printer is pushed in Connect the power cord to the AC inlet on the left side of the printer Plug the power cord into a properly grounded electrical outlet Plugging in the Printer 47 Testing the Printer To test whether the printer is set up correctly print a status sheet The status sheet contains information about the printer including the current settings To print a status sheet follow the steps below
20. between the two connectors Check the connector size first and connect each cable to the same size connector Installing the Options 31 10 Attach the cables on the left side and close the cover of the unit to hold the cables down Then attach the connector cover on the printer 32 Installing the Options Installing the Hard Disk Drive You can increase the printer capacity by installing the optional Hard Disk Drive C82377 This option allows you to print complex and large print jobs at high speed 1 Open the printer cover and pull out the paper path unit at least 10 cm 4 inches 2 Remove the screws on the right side cover Installing the Options 33 3 Openthefront side of the right side cover until the pin on the cover comes out of the hole Then remove the cover by sliding it back 4 Press the Hard Disk Drive down until the socket and connector are firmly connected And tighten the retaining screws with a cross head screwdriver oS SSS 34 Installing the Options Caution You should not remove any modules from the circuit board If you remove them the printer will not work 5 Toreplace the right side cover first insert the cover s hook in the slot at the back of the printer then close the front side making sure to fit the cover pin into the printer hole 6 Secure the cover with the screws Close the front cover and the pape
21. ckage and unwrap the protective sheet while holding the handle as shown below Caution 1 Be sure not to touch or scratch the surface of the drum Q When replacing the photoconductor unit avoid exposing it to room light any longer than necessary 4 Hold the handle on top of the photoconductor unit and place the unit on the guide rails Insert it all the way into the printer 16 Assembling the Printer 5 Turn the small lever on the photoconductor unit to the left Assembling the Printer 17 7 Close the front cover Installing the Fuser Oil Roll Before installing the fuser oil roll read the following handling precautions dA Do not touch the white roll surface QJ If oil gets on your skin or clothes wash it off immediately T The roll should always be kept horizontal Do not tilt or lean it against anything Doing so might cause oil leakage and impair print quality A Keep the Fuser Oil roll out of the reach of children 18 Assembling the Printer To install the fuser oil roll 1 Pulldown the Face up Tray Assembling the Printer 19 3 Take the fuser oil roll out of its box and remove the cover and two pins as shown below Note Do not touch the white roll surface 4 Hold the roll handle and insert the new fuser oil roll into the fuser unit matching the green marks on the roll a
